LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) -- A spirited charge and double-digit win gave the Copeland Crazies reason to cheer, but a win from Lakeshore over Madison kept the Loggers from a second straight Northwoods League playoff appearance.
The Loggers would take some solace in having the most players (5) named to the second-half All-Star Team. Michael Katz, Nick Day, Brandon DeFazio, Josh Frye and Steven Hagen made-up the largest contingent of All-Stars from any squad in the league.
La Crosse grabbed a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the first. Team MVP Michael Katz blasted a three-run home run, his 18th of the season.
Johnny Bekakis added more insurance in the second inning. Bekakis shot a base-hit up the middle scoring two more Loggers. La Crosse led 7-1 after two.
Brandon DeFazio continued to add to the tally. DeFazio went 3-5 in the game with 3 RBI.
The Loggers crushed the Woodchucks 13-2. It would not be enough, however. Lakeshore defeated Madison 17-3 on Sunday night ensuring a playoff appearance for the Chinooks.
"It was a great season," said Bobby Juan. "We have nothing to put our heads down about. We were right there at the end of the last half and right there at the end of this half. We did what we needed to do but it just didn't work out. We're all real happy with this season. We all had a lot of fun."
Katz added, "It's just kind of unfortunate that it game down to the last game both times and we just missed it barely. I don't think I can judge that as a failure just because we didn't make the playoffs."
They finish the second half with a 22-13 record. La Crosse wrapped up the year with the South Division's second best mark at 43-27.
