Rep. Ron Kind enjoying meeting with constituents

LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) -- US Representative Ron Kind is back in Wisconsin's third district.

Congress is in the middle of a five week recess.

So Kind, who said he held four "listening sessions" last week in various areas of the district, is enjoying being able to interact with constituents.

"It keeps me connected to people, and you can learn things from them," Kind said.

"Not all the ideas are emanating from Washington," he added with a smile. "A lot of the best ones, I've found, occur right here in Western Wisconsin."

"I can then take those to Washington, D.C. and work with my colleagues on them," Kind said.

The congressman said the most common theme at last week's listening sessions was the economy.

He said he's conscious of the country's current, $17-trillion budget deficit.

But said austerity alone will not help those looking for work.

"Now is not the time to be under-investing in crucial areas, even though we have a budget deficit," Kind said. "There are some big, spending categories we can look to for reforms to find savings in."

But Kind said "crucial" areas like "education and job training, broadband expansion, and infrastructure" should not take a hit.

Kind will be holding two more listening sessions next week.
