Wis. orchards bouncing back after poor harvest

FOND DU LAC, Wisconsin (WXOW) - Wisconsin apple growers in the eastern part of the state say perfect weather should help them bounce back from one of their worst harvests in more than six decades.

The National Agriculture Statistics Service says last year's apple harvest was the smallest since 1945 and only half as big as the year before. Apple production was hurt when a late frost killed blossoms, and a drought that followed didn't help.

But apple growers say weather this year has been nearly ideal. Picking has already started at some orchards, like the Little Farmer northeast of Fond du Lac. General manager Jeremy Klemp tells The Reporter Media that it's nice to see some red on the trees.
