Gundersen Health System Awarded Excellence in Lactation Care

LA CROSSE, Wisconsin - Gundersen Health System has received an award for its excellence in lactation care.

It received the International Board of Certified Lactation Consultant's Care Award (IBCLC), which was given because of Gundersen's commitment to providing and promoting breast feeding as part of the care for babies and new mothers.

Breastfeeding rates are on the rise as is the need for trained professionals who can help.

Gundersen has five lactation consultants certified by the IBCLC--the only internationally recognized lactation certification in the world.

And at least one lactation consultant is available every day and there are trained lactation educators on duty 24/7.

While breastfeeding is natural, there can be complications, risk factors and mothers who need extra support. The lactation consultants are specially qualified to work with breastfeeding mothers and babies who have problems.

Stephanie Ryan, RN, IBCLC states, "Certified lactation consultant is a growing discipline and new mothers are savvier. They look for hospitals with certified lactation consultants on staff. Mothers-to-be come to Gundersen because they want to know their care is in the hands of the best trained staff."
