Police say man shot by officers had knife

MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Madison police say a man killed in a confrontation with officers was armed with a knife.

Assistant Chief John Davenport says the officers were told the man had cut his wife and was suicidal. He says they confronted him and tried unsuccessfully to stun him with a Taser. He says the man ignored commands and continued acting aggressively to the officers, so they opened fire.

Authorities later determined his wife was not injured.

It happened around 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

Police have not yet disclosed how many officers responded, how many fired their weapons, how many times he was shot, or in which parts of the body. His name has not been released.

Davenport says the officers were placed on paid leave as standard procedure. None of the officers was injured.
