La Crosse, WISCONSIN (WXOW) UW-La Crosse received one first place vote in a pre-season poll of the WIAC's head coaches and sports information directors.
That one vote for the Eagles came from their head coach Joel Dettwiler.
Dettwiler is back for his third year as head coach and he loves his team.
The Eagles return 12 starters from last year's squad that finished 3-4 in the league and in 5th place.
But is Dettwiler serious when he talks about making the jump all the way first in an ultra-tough conference?
"We have the ability to win every game if we play well. That's the message I'm sending to the kids. If that's cocky, then I guess it is. The kids have done the preparation I think to become a championship football team and now we have to prove it," Dettwiler said.
"It's a tough conference. It's a respectable conference. We're going to have some tough games. We feel that we're a tough team. We feel that we're a team that teams are going to have to prepare for. Whether we're here or on the road we're going to be the same team. We're going to put a good product on the field," said senior quarterback Andy Sires.
The Eagles play 6 home games this season starting with a September 7th date with Dubuque.
