V-Hawks volleyball and women's soccer receiving votes

Posted:
La Crosse, Wis. – The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) announced the preseason Top-25 polls for women's soccer and volleyball today and Viterbo University was mentioned in both polls. Women's soccer found themselves in the receiving votes category while the volleyball team was ranked 15th.

The Lady V-Hawk soccer team was just outside the top-25 as they came in the 27th spot their highest in school history. The V-Hawks are coming off a season to remember when they finished 15-3-1 overall and won a regular season and postseason Midwest Collegiate Conference title. They qualified for the programs first ever trip to the NAIA National Tournament where they lost in the opening round to national runner-up Olivet Nazarene University 2-1. Last week, the MCC announced that the V-Hawks were preseason favorites to defend their MCC championship. Viterbo does return eight of their 11 starters from a year ago including 2012 NAIA Honorable Mention All-Americans Molly Machometa (So. – McHenry, Ill.) and Steph Wisen (Sr. – Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.).

Like the women's soccer team, the V-Hawk volleyball team also is coming off its most successful season in school history. In 2012, the V-Hawks finished the season 36-8 overall and won a regular season and postseason MCC title while also qualifying for the programs first ever trip to the NAIA National Tournament. At nationals, the V-Hawks put together a Cinderella run as they knocked off three teams ranked in the top 12 and advanced to the national quarterfinals where they lost to national runner-up Columbia College. The V-Hawks are slight preseason favorites to win the MCC over Grand View University who is ranked 24th in the preseason polls. Unlike the soccer team, the V-Hawks lost five of their six starters from last season but do return NAIA First Team All-American and MCC Player of the Year Alicia Olson (Jr. – Eau Claire, Wis.).
