ONALASKA, Wisconsin (WXOW) – In the last decade, the Onalaska School District said the poverty level of students doubled to 31 percent.
That means many students don't have the resources to buy basic school supplies.
To meet the need, Great Rivers United Way and the Onalaska Walmart teamed up to run "Stuff the Bus."
They're asking the community to donate school supplies in the Walmart parking lot that will go to Onalaska students in need.
"I think we all remember school shopping when we were kids and what a fun time that is and it's a pretty exciting time. And so to not be able to do that and to not be able to show up on the first day really prepared and ready with all the supplies, is pretty upsetting, I think, for students," said Jason Larsen, Great Rivers United Way Community Impact Director.
"Stuff the Bus" will continue Saturday, Aug. 24 in the Onalaska Walmart parking lot from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m.
