Conejo Records Hat Trick, Viterbo Defeats Cardinal Stritch

La Crosse, Wis. – Freshman Liz Conejo (Fr. – Sun Prairie, Wis.), recorded her first hat trick of her career to help lead the Viterbo University women's soccer team to a 5-1 win over Cardinal Stritch University in their season opener.

Conejo wasted very little time scoring her first goal in a V-Hawk uniform as she took a pass from Morgan Davis (Jr. – Omaha, Neb.) and found the back of the net just eight minutes into the contest. Another freshman, Katie Bares (Belgium, Wis.), would put the V-Hawks up 2-0 just eight minutes later as she scored her first goal as a V-Hawk. Then in the 20th minute, Cardinal Stritch University would be called for a foul inside the penalty box giving Viterbo University a penalty kick. Junior Bre Burry  (Huntley, Ill.) stepped up and put the free kick in the back of the net to give Viterbo a 3-0 lead just 20 minutes into the contest.

That would be all of the scoring for the V-Hawks in the first half as they led 3-0 at the break. Viterbo completely controlled the first half as they outshot Cardinal Stritch 14-0. Sophomore Alicia Seachord (Lincoln, Neb.) played the opening half in goal for the V-Hawks.

Cardinal Stritch would finally get on the board early in the second half (52nd minute) on an unassisted goal by Anna Stadler. Viterbo would respond quickly though as Conjeo got away from the Wolves defense and took a pass from Burry for her second goal of the game in the 52nd minute. Conjeo would then cap the scoring with her third goal of the game after receiving a pass from Courtney Morgan (So. – Appleton, Wis.) in the 80th minute.

For the game, the V-Hawks outshot the Wolves 18-9  led by Conejo's five shots and Bares four shots. Both teams finished with four corner kicks. Stadler led the Wolves with three shots while Lourdes had two shots. Junior McKenzie Guth (Onalaska, Wis.) played the final 45 minutes in goal for the V-Hawks and finished with six saves. Kathleen Sauvey played all 90 minutes in goal for the Wolves and finished with four saves.

Viterbo is now 1-0 on the year while Cardinal Stritch falls to 0-1 to the start year. Viterbo will take a week break before playing Trinity Christian College next Saturday, August 31st at 12:00 pm.
