LA CROSSE, WI (WXOW) — The La Crosse Fire Department said they traced the source of an early morning fire in Fayze's restaurant Sunday to a part of the building's foundation between the basement and the first floor.
The exact cause of the fire is undetermined, the department said.
When crews arrived at 135 S. 4th St. just after 12:30 a.m., they saw smoke coming from the building. Firefighters found flames inside, according to Division Chief Jeff Murphy.
A handful of staff was working inside the restaurant/bakery at the time of the fire, the fire department said.
Crews evacuated the workers and the second floor of the building, Top Shots Pool & Darts. They inspected the 4-story structure to make sure no one else was inside.
No one was injured.
Fayze's owner Drew Williams woke up to a nightmare.
Rushed out of his house by police, the nearly 6-year owner of Fayze's arrived to find firefighters surrounding the building.
"It was just a little overwhelming not knowing what was going on or what the extent of it would be," Williams said.
The fire took about 30 minutes to extinguish, Murphy said. No neighboring businesses were damaged by fire.
Around 1:30 a.m., Top Shots reopened to the public.
Fayze's staff worked all of Sunday to clean up the damage.
"A little devastated but also a little relieved," Williams said. "Very, very important that no one was hurt."
Sunday night, a health inspector said Fayze's is cleared to reopen for business at 6:30 a.m. Monday.
Fifteen firefighters responded to the fire call, according to the department. La Crosse Police were also on the scene.
