Eau Claire (WQOW)- It's a running joke in Wisconsin that there are two seasons: winter and construction season.
"You can't drive 20 miles in this area without coming upon construction," points out Lieutenant Jeff Lorentz.
The Wisconsin State Patrol says I-94 and Highway 53 have been home to a lot of road work this summer. But because of the more than 700,000 Wisconsinites expected to leave town over Labor Day Weekend, all lanes should be open.
"You are going to have four lanes but some of it is going to be temporary lanes," Lorentz explains. "So it is not your normal 65 that you are used to going through with your traffic; particularly in the Foster area by Osseo."
Those lanes will be open Friday through Monday. So if you plan on leaving earlier or later, plan for delays.
"Come Tuesday, they are going back to two lanes bidirectional between Highways 37 and 53," says Lorentz. "So got a short reprieve, we'll enjoy it while we got it but don't get too used to this."
The Wisconsin State Patrol says you are going to see less construction workers. But you are also going to see more police.
"We'll be out there in force this weekend," Lorentz responds. "We are working in cooperation with all the local agencies, with the cities, with the sheriff's departments. A lot of those folks as well have the grants too for the alcohol detail so we will be out there and we want everybody to be safe this holiday weekend."
The Wisconsin State Patrol says it doesn't know if the ramps off Highway 93 will be open by the weekend.
