Vernon, WISCONSIN (WXOW) – Vernon County Officials are warning people about a phone scam. Sheriff John Spears said the scammers seem to be targeting the elderly.
Spears said the scammers call and tell the person that they have either won in a contest, sweepstakes, Mega Millions, or just won a car. The scammer then ask them to send them a green dot car, money order or a check to them to pay for the insurance on the winnings.
Spears say the scammer usually tell the person the insurance amount is about $5,000. The scammers are telling people to send money to the following states and cities, Miami, Florida, Las Vegas, Nevada, New Jersey or New York.
Sheriff Spears asks that you do not give them any information or send any money, and to report this to your local law enforcement agency.
