UW-La Crosse welcomes large freshman class to campus

LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) -- Chancellor Joe Gow gave his customary, start-of-semester remarks Wednesday at the UW-La Crosse.

Gow praised the university's student retention rate, 88%, which is the second highest in the University of Wisconsin system.

He also recognized the school's recruitment staff. The UWL had previously set a goal of bringing in 1,975 new freshmen and 550 transfer students for the fall, 2013 semester.

But Gow said Wednesday the school has exceeded those benchmarks -- welcoming 2,007 freshmen and 564 transfer students to campus when classes start Tuesday.

Gow said the increased tuition revenue should allow the school to provide modest salary increases for some of its faculty and staff.

The Chancellor could not provide an exact number, but said the pay increases can help the UWL stay competitive with other institutions that typically can pay teachers more.
