LA CROSSE, WI (WXOW) - Health officials in La Crosse are warning parents of candy-flavored tobacco products that target kids.
The strawberry flavored cigar is sold in La Crosse and is actually cheaper than most tobacco products.
The La Crosse County Health Department says the colorful packaging targets youth and the lighter colors makes the cigar seem healthier.
Judi Zabel, La Crosse County Health Educator, says kids assume if it is flavored like strawberry and it looks like candy and it's not as expensive as cigarettes it must be safer, and that truly is not the case.
Zabel says its important that parents recognize the new tobacco products that are out there, if they see something fall out of their child's purse, they might think it's gum but it might be a tobacco product, or if it falls out of your child's backpack, that looks like candy and yet it could be a tobacco product.
