2 dead following highway standoff

OSHKOSH, Wis. (AP) - Two suspects are dead following a standoff on a busy highway in Winnebago County.

Sheriff's officials say the man and woman apparently died of gunshot wounds inside the car, shots that were not fired by authorities. The man and woman were suspects in robbery at a liquor store and bar in Vinland and deputies tried to stop their vehicle on Highway 41 about 4 p.m. Wednesday. That's when the standoff on 41 between Highways 45 and 76 began.

Several law enforcement agencies responded, including a tactical unit. Traffic backed up for miles during the standoff. About 6 p.m. officers say they heard two gunshots coming from the vehicle. Deputies approached and found the two suspects dead.

WLUK-TV says the investigation is being led by Oshkosh police.
