When the UW-L football team takes Roger Harring field Saturday night, they will take it with a new confidence and a new swagger.
"I talked to our players I want them to when someone asks, how many wins you got this year or how are you going to do this year, I want them to say were going to win the conference, I want them to have that attitude you have to believe before it can happen," said UW-L Head Coach Joel Dettwiler.
Despite a record of 7 and 13 in his first two seasons, Dettwiler picked his team to win the WIAC title, a feat the Eagles have not accomplished since 2004.
"Why would I vote for anyone but ourselves if I tell our kids that we are hear to win the conference championship, that was the biggest part behind it and I think were very capable of doing it and that's the kids job its my job and that's our biggest goal heading into this year, if we can make plays when we need to make plays were going to win a lot of football games," said Dettwiler.
Dettwiler, now has the pieces in place, his first recruiting class is entering their junior and senior seasons and are ready to lead the program.
"When we started out everyone was ampted up and over excited and wasn't mentally there the first two years we were still trying to figure out everyone's rolls, year 3 has come around and everyone has figured out where they belong on the team and now its time to roll and see what this season brings," said UW-L Running Back Jared Stan.
If La Crosse can fulfil Dettwiler's prophecy the Eagles will hang championship banner #34 the most in WIAC History.
