UPDATE: Three buildings a total loss in Winona Fire

Winona, Minnesota (WXOW) Update: The Winona Fire Department says three buildings are total loss in the downtown area, following a fire early Friday morning.  

The fire broke out around 2 a.m. at Center and Third Streets.   Winona Fire Chief Curt Bittle says he suspects the fire started in the Islamic Center,  but added the starting point and source have yet to be determined.   The Minnesota fire marshal will investigate.

Fire Fighters say the Islamic Center, Brosnahan Law Firm and Sole Sport are a total loss.  The Islamic Center has already been torn down and officials say they will do the same to the other  buildings.  The Blooming Grounds Coffee House and Pretty Things on Third also received fire damage.  Officials have not said how bad the damage is at this time.

The buildings were not only used for business. There are several apartments on upper floors.op.  News 19 spoke to a Winona State Student who lives above the Brosnahan Law Firm.   He told News 19 he lost everything in the fire. The student said he will be housed in a dorm on campus.

Officials said about a dozen people were living in apartments above the affected buildings.  The Red Cross is assisting those people and putting them up in hotels.  Some of the tenants are Winona State Students.  Those students are being placed in open dorms on campus.

The large fire took Winona crews more than six hours to contain.  Several local agencies were called in to assist including the Wilson Fire Department, St. Charles Fire Department, Goodview Fire Department and Pickwick Fire Department.  

No injuries have been reported.  The case of the fire is under investigation.

Winona, MINNESOTA (WXOW) - Update: The Winona Fire Department is knocking down some buildings involved in the fire.  

News 19 spoke to a Winona State Student who was living above the Brosnahan Law Firm in Winona. He told our crew he was informed that building will be torn down. The student said he will be housed in a dorm on campus.

Fire crews remain at the fire scene in downtown Winona.  That started about 2am this morning.

Winona Fire Chief Curt Bittle said the fire may have started in the Islamic Center, but added the ignition point and source have yet to be determined.

News 19 has been told there will be a press conference with the Winona Fire Department at 10 a.m.  As soon as that takes place, we will have another update.

Winona, MINNESOTA (WXOW) - Update: Local fire departments have been called in to cover Winona Fire Stations, as fire crews remain at the fire in downtown Winona.

Fire crews have largely stopped the spread of the fire that began about 2 a.m. this morning and has burned several buildings.

Winona Fire Chief Curt Bittle said the fire may have started in the Islamic Center, but added the ignition point and source have yet to be determined.

The building not only houses businesses, it is also an apartment complex.  The Red Cross told News 19 some Winona State Students lived in the apartments.  They have been place in hotels.

We do not know how much damage is done.  Officials said no injures have been reported.

A News 19 crew is there.  We will continue to follow this story as more information becomes available.

The fire started about 2 a.m. and the blaze quickly spread to other buildings. 

There are currently four fire departments on scene, helping control the flames.

No official word yet on how the far started.

WINONA, Minnesota (WXOW) - Firefighters are battling a structure fire on Center Street in Winona this morning. We have a crew on scene. Winona Fire Chief, Curt Bittle, tells us multiple buildings are affected. There are currently four departments on scene, helping control the flames.

According to the The Winona Daily News, the Islamic Center caught fire about 2 a.m. and the blaze quickly spread to other buildings.

Police tell News 19 apartments on the upper floors of Brosnahan Law Firm are destroyed. Everyone was able to evacuate safely. Our crew on scene says heavy smoke continues to billow from the burning buildings.

The American Red Cross is on scene with food and beverages for the first responders.

We have a crew on scene and will continue to follow this story as more information becomes available.
