Friends team up to find Oktoberfest Medallion

Posted:

LA CROSSE, WI (WXOW)—The hunt for the Oktoberfest Medallion is over.

After five clues, it was found this morning around 7:30 on Granddad Bluff.

Friends Willie Bittner and Kerry Pischke, both from La Crosse, got up at 6:00 every morning to begin researching the clues.

Bittner found the medallion near the restroom at Granddad Bluff under a leaf. He said he picked it up, put it in his pocket and showed Pischke before leaving.

He said when he found it there were about 20 other people still looking.

His strategy this year was teaming up with Pischke to research the clues. Both have come close to finding it in previous years on their own.

"Well you have to read the clues do a little bit of research and the biggest thing is you have to think ahead because there's a lot of people always going to the site," Bittner said.

The prize includes $500, Downtown Main Street Gift Certificates and two tickets to the Fest Masters Ball.

Pischke and her husband will get the tickets because Bittner and his wife already have theirs.

LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) -The hunt is on for the Oktoberfest Medallion.

According to the Oktoberfest committee, the rules are the same as in years past.

The 2013 Oktoberfest Medallion:

• is always located within the La Crosse city limits.
• is never buried in the ground.
• is always on public property.
• is accessible 24 hours, BUT posted hours should be observed.
• fits in the palm of a hand.
• may be camouflaged.

The Oktoberfest committee asks that those hunting for the medallion to respect the property they're searching.

Each day, we'll post the latest clue here on our website.

Here's Clue #1:

Leaves of green turning to a yellow and orange hue,
The breezes of summer begin taking their northern cue;
Celebrating Generations is this year's Oktoberfest theme,
Head out for the hunt early so you're not swimming upstream.

----------------------------------------

 Here's Clue #2:

The big winds won't blow here, they say, Let's hope the rivers won't lead you astray;

The Mississippi, Black and La Crosse easily in view,

Read carefully so you drift less as you pursue.

----------------------------------------
Here's Clue #3:

Look attentively and you're apt to see an old, decrepit path,

Despite its importance little remains in the aftermath;

A swingless thruway became the modern-day route,

Decades later gained another just to help out.

----------------------------------------

Here's Clue #4:

His vision during four-plus decades on the city board,

helped plow through and bridge traffic away and toward;

Today, part of the "reserve" does much the same,

A rolling view that welcomes travelers and bears his name.

----------------------------------------

Here's Clue #5:

He oversaw the platting of an addition totaling one-four-oh,

The foundations of his homes came from the limestone chateau;

Looking north, neglected land became a final resting place of honor,

A lasting tribute to friends, military heroes and neighbors of yore.
