LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) - BloodCenter of Wisconsin says they are at a critical shortage right now and are in need of donors.
"It's rare for BloodCenter of Wisconsin to do this but we are at an emergency plea, I guess you would say, for blood," said April Everson, Donor Recruiting Specialist at BloodCenter of Wisconsin. "We're in need of well over 1000 units to be able to support the counties and communities and local hospitals."
BloodCenter is the sole provider of blood in La Crosse to both Gundersen Health System and Mayo Health System Franciscan Healthcare.
Right now they are celebrating their 10-year partnership with La Crosse by hosting a two-day blood drive. Everson say this drive couldn't have come at a better time.
"Originally we were just celebrating ten years, wanted to thank our donors, wanted to celebrate and recognize them with just this blood drive," said Everson. "But with the shortage we extended our hours."
The blood drive is being held in the North Hall of the La Crosse Center. Their extended Thursday hours are from 8AM until 5PM. Donors are asked to eat a good meal and drink plenty of water. Those who donate will receive an Oktoberfest button.
