LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) - UPDATE: A young man has life threatening injuries after he falls more than 70 feet down a bluff Friday afternoon.
A 9-1-1 call came in shortly after 1:30 p.m. stating the man fell off a trail located between Rim of the City Road and Highway 16. According to authorities, the man was hiking with friends in an unrestricted area when he fell.
While it only took rescuers about ten minutes to find the man, described as in his 20's, it took another 90 minutes for them to bring the man safely down the bluff. Rough terrain and heavy tree coverage were obstacles that delayed bringing the man to safety.
Due to the area where the man was, La Crosse Fire Department Technical Rescue Team brought the man down to an area along Highway 16 just north of Bluff Pass Road. Both northbound lanes of Highway 16 were closed while the man was taken off the bluff and loaded into a waiting ambulance. He was then taken to a La Crosse hospital.
La Crosse Fire Department Captain Frank Devine says its amazing the man survived the fall.
Last month, a woman was seriously injured when she fell off a bluff above La Crosse. At the time, Captain Devine said that was the most challenging rescue the team faced. The rescue Friday, according to Devine, was even more difficult than the one before.
The man's name has not been released.
