Childhood friends take Freedom Honor Flight together

LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) – Korean War and World War II veterans headed to the nation's capitol Saturday as part of the 12th Freedom Honor Flight.

The flight sends about 100 veterans to D.C. to see the memorials built in their honor.

Robert Marco and Dick Poellinger are two Korean War veterans on the flight.

They've been friends since 1941, went to grade school in La Crosse with one another, and even enlisted in the Navy together where their paths crossed a few times.

Now they're taking the Freedom Honor Flight together.

"My home port was Naples, Italy and when the fleet came in – (Marco) operated with the fleet – he came to my ship to eat. We had real butter and real milk," Poellinger said.

"They had the Advil on there. We didn't have no Advil on our ship," Marco said.

The veterans received a singing send-off from Northwoods Elementary Students.
