Two vehicle accident sends Fitchburg woman to hospital with serious injuries

TOWN OF CHRISTIANA, Wisconsin (WXOW) - The Vernon County Sheriff's office says a two vehicle crash resulted in serious injuries to one party. The accident happened Sunday morning at approximately 11 in the Township of Christiana. Kody Green, 18, of La Crosse was operating a vehicle eastbound on U.S. Highway 14 near Allen Lane, just west of Westby. Green's vehicle crossed the center line and struck an oncoming vehicle.

Green's vehicle traveled off the roadway, struck a mailbox and came to rest, upright, in a hay field along the north side of the highway. Green struck the other vehicle in a way that made it spin around, overturn, when it finally came to rest on its top along the highway shoulder. The passenger of that vehicle, Ana Maria Reyes-Gonzalez, 38, of Fitchburg sustained serious injuries in the crash. She was flown to Gundersen Health System in La Crosse where she was listed in critical condition as of 8:45 PM Sunday.

Another passenger in the Gonzalez vehicle, Antonio Maya, 49, of Madison sustained non-life threatening injuries and was also transported to Gundersen Health System. A 13 year old girl from the same vehicle was also transported to the hospital and released after being checked for possible injuries. The Vernon County Sheriff's Office says two children were properly restrained in child safety seats and escaped injury. The driver of the vehicle and another adult were not injured.

Green sustained possible injuries, but refused medical treatment at the scene. He told investigators he was tired and may have fallen asleep. Green also reported swerving to miss striking a deer.

Westby Police, Fire, and First Responders assisted Vernon County. The crash remains under investigation.
