La Crosse, WI (WXOW) A beautiful day for opening day at the 53rd annual Oktoberfest.
The traditional tapping of the Golden Keg kicks things off at the Southside Fest Grounds.
People started gathering by 9am for the ceremony, which began at 11am.
City Brewery Brewmaster Randy Hughes presided over the ceremonial keg tapping.
And one man has seen most all of them. Walt Hammond is the oldest living Festmaster, He presided over the festival in 1972. Walt says he's seen plenty of changes over the years. Walt says; they drink more beer. A lot has changed; the size of the grounds; the entertainment for the younger people.
Friday night, Walt and the exclusive Festmasters club will welcome a new member with the naming of the 2013 Oktoberfest Festmaster.
