LA CROSSE, WI (WXOW)—The online health exchange opens Tuesday and under the Affordable Care Act that's when people without health insurance can begin signing up for coverage
The Obama Administration said the law is designed to make sure everyone has affordable and comprehensive coverage.
There are a few different people who can help you with the insurance exchanges; Navigators and Certified Application Counselors help you sign up and Agents can help you choose the best plan for you.
If you want, you can sign up for insurance on your own by visiting healthcare.gov.
But if you want help face to face, in a couple weeks, Western Regional Enrollment Network can help.
"What we've done is come up with a web site. We're not ready to launch it yet because we're trying to fill in the blanks for the CAC so when people really do go there that the resources are there," Lorie Graff, Consortium Manager, Western Region for Economic Assistance said.
At this time, there are no CACs in La Crosse County.
"There is some back up on the testing they're offering at three different locations so it's been a little challenging to get people into the training or testing," Graff said.
There is help available now from Agents and Brokers at places like The Insurance Center.
"They're ready to sign people up,"Jeff Leclaire, Sales Manager, The Insurance Center said. "Help them answer questions, get them through the process whether they get subsidies or not, also to weed out some of those people that really can't be helped by the market place."
It won't cost you any more to get help from an Agent.
"Our agents get paid from the carriers like they always have," Leclaire said. "Those fees are there and build into the rates regardless if you use a broker or not."
No matter how you plan to sign up, one thing remains the same, you still have time
"Even though it opens on October 1, it's for coverage on January 1. So what's important is they get their application into the market place before December 15."
Keep in mind all Agents and CACs must be certified. They should be able to show you proof of that.
Plus they'll use the same web site to help you register as you would at home, https://www.healthcare.gov/
Beware of anyone taking your information a different way.
