SPARTA, Wisconsin (WXOW) - A 21-year-old man was killed in an officer-involved shooting Friday night in Sparta, according to the Sparta Police Department.
A news release from the police department said the shooting happened around 9:15 p.m. while police were responding to a disturbance on the 1000 block of South Fairway Drive.
The man was reportedly threatening family members with a knife at the family's home. Police would not confirm whether the 21-year-old also resided there.
He died from gunshot wounds, police said. His name has not been released.
The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave as per department policy.
The Sparta Police Department was assisted by the Monroe County Sheriff's Department, Wisconsin State Patrol, the Division of Criminal Investigation, Sparta Ambulance Service, the Monroe County Medical Examiner and the Monroe County Communications Center.
The last Sparta officer-involved shooting happened in January 2012, said Sgt. Joel Ames. An officer shot a suspect armed with a rifle. The Monroe County District Attorney justified the officer's actions in April 2012.
