LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) – The La Crosse Civil Air Patrol Cadet program, the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, honored two of its highest achieving cadets Saturday.
Cadet Capt. Michael Cunningham received the Amelia Earhart Award. It's given to just 15 percent of cadets nationwide.
Cadet 2d Lt. Andrew Ackerman received the Mitchell Award. It's given to just 30 percent of Civil Air Patrol cadets.
Ackerman said his grandpa helped start up the Air Force Reserves. Saturday his family presented him his grandpa's officer cap.
"It meant a lot. I didn't get much of a chance to meet my grandfather. He died when I was four, and I'm very honored to be able to carry on his legacy with that," Ackerman said.
Both cadets attend Aquinas High School and currently serve in staff positions with the squadron.
Rep. Steve Doyle, (D)-Onalaska, gave the cadets their awards.
