UNDATED, Wisconsin (AP) - A committee of UW System regents approved the plan Thursday at UW-Parkside. Now the full board will take it up Friday morning.
The plan expands the range of salaries that can be offered to certain new hires. For example, the outgoing UW System president makes $418,000. Under the new plan his replacement could make anywhere from $399,000 to $598,500.
The regents committee acknowledged that the public could be upset by the move. But members say it's important they be able to offer competitive salaries when recruiting top talent.
The full board will also consider a proposal to modify the levels of reserve cash the campuses have to keep on hand.
Chancellors at ten University of Wisconsin campuses have been awarded salary raises and UW La Crosse Chancellor Joe Gow's is the largest.
The raises were approved Thursday in the closed session meeting.
Gow's salary increased by about 5% 0r $10,000.
Gow says he'll contribute the raise to student scholarships.
Raises also went to UW Milwaukee's Chancellor and Chancellor's at Green Bay, Oshkosh, Parkside, Plateville, River falls, Stout, Superior and whitewater.
