LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) - The La Crosse community honored Derrick 'Deke' Kroll Saturday night with a run in his honor.
Derrick died of a rare form of cancer in 2009 but before he passed away Derrick was an avid runner.
So his memory inspired the "Glow in the Deke run."
More than 2,000 people participated, including News 19.
There was a 5k race as well as a kids run and after party.
Garrett Jerue, one of the event organizers, says "we just wanted to take all the good that he [Derrick] represented and do bigger, better, brighter and that's what this event is all about."
Money raised tonight goes to the Boy's and Girls Club of La Crosse.
Deke was a part of that group as well as the Hope Lives Foundation which helps local people battling cancer.
Organizers are hoping to raise over 48,000 dollars.
News 19 was a proud sponsor.
