MARQUETTE, Iowa (WXOW) - Effigy Mounds National Monument has reopened now that the government shutdown has ended.
The monument is about 60 miles south of La Crosse.
"I can't tell you how happy we are to be open again," Effigy Mounds Superintendent Jim Nepstad said in a written statement. "We had several employees here this morning well before the sun came up so we could get all the signs removed and the buildings opened up."
The park, visitor center, and hiking trails are all available for the public to enjoy once again after being closed since October 1 due to the federal government shutdown.
October is typically a very busy month for the park as visitors flock to see the autumn colors.
The Visitor Center is open seven days a week, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Please call the park at 563-873-3491 to find out about the status of any previously scheduled events for the month of October.
