MADISON, Wisconsin (WXOW) - In announcing his candidacy for the District 17 Senate seat, Ernie Wittwer provided a brief biography of himself.
Ernie Wittwer is a Wisconsin native, raised on a rural dairy farm in western Dane County. From showing Holsteins at the country fair to driving a tractor, Wittwer was taught to understand the value of hard work and common sense from a young age. After graduating from UW-Madison with an undergraduate degree in Secondary Education and a master's degree in Public management, Wittwer began working for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT). Wittwer worked for the DOT for over 24 years, including serving as Agency Budget Director in the 1980s and Chief of Staff to the Secretary. Overseeing the Department's budget process in the early 1980s, Wittwer has a keen understanding of how effective, efficient government can and should work. For the past 13 years, Wittwer has worked for the UW-Madison Transportation Center, including serving as Director of the Center.
For 13 years, Wittwer has lived on his 55-acre farm in the Town of Willow in Richland County with his wife Rita. Wittwer and his wife Rita have two adult sons.
