Westby, WISCONSIN (WXOW) Eight area teams plus 7 individuals will make the trek to Wisconsin Rapids Saturday for the WIAA State Cross Country Meet.
But only Westby qualified their entire boys and girls teams.
The Norsemen boys are headed there after winning the sectional title on their home course last weekend.
They have 8 seniors on the squad and after falling just short of qualifying last year, they're anxious to show they belong among the state's best in division 3.
"We're a close knit group of guys together. We're really good friends and we're all pushing each other constantly every day at practice. This Saturday we're going to be pushing each other," said senior Austin Pasch.
"It's something we thought could be in the cards. The kids worked incredibly hard. They came through at the right time. They've built a lot of momentum over the last two weeks. We'll just see how we can do this weekend," said head coach Brian Huebner.
Meanwhile, the Westby girls are headed back to state for the second year in a row.
4 runners return from last year's team that took 6th last year.
They'll be counting on that experience to move up in the standings this year.
They also won their Sectional last Saturday.
"We've had injuries but we've had a lot of hard practices. We push each other a lot and it really helped pushing each other and getting each other motivated and excited," said junior Becca Maxwell.
"I think, with the girls, we have great leadership and experience. So we just tell them they know the course. They know what to expect. It's just a matter of building them up now to what this year's experiences and this year's expectations will be," said asst. coach Dave Nelson.
The state meet will kickoff at 11am with the girls division 3 race at The Ridges Golf Course.
