LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) - It took two overtimes for the UW-La Crosse Eagles to get their third straight win, 24-21, over winless UW-River Falls Saturday afternoon at Roger Harring Stadium.
The Falcons tried to turn that around by getting on the board first with a three yard run by Emmanuel Udeh mid-way through the first quarter. That's the way it sat until late in the third quarter when River Falls QB Ryan Kusilek threw a 10-yard score to Brad Beeskow. The quarter ended with the game at 14-0 for the Falcons.
With more than half of the fourth quarter gone, the Eagles managed to get their offense in gear. UW-L scored at the 6:55 mark with a five yard run by Ben Hertrampf to trim the lead to 14-7.
The defense helped out when Ben Mathias made the Falcon's Udeh fumble with Tyler Argall recovering the ball at the UWL 42.
After two misses, QB Trent Cummings hit Mark Dorlack, Tony Favre, and Samuel Zwieg to get the Eagles down to the River Falls 7-yard line. Two plays later, Cummings found Chris Stackhouse for a 12-yard TD. Matt Van Druten's extra point tied the game at 14.
River Falls could only get to near mid-field before time expired in regulation.
They did get the ball to start the first overtime. They capped their drive with a 2-yard dash by Robbie Flom. The extra point gave the Falcons a 21-14 lead.
The response was quick for the Eagles-Cummings hit Tony Favre with a 25-yard score on their first play, along with Van Druten's extra point, to send the game to the second overtime.
UW-L got the ball first to start this period, but couldn't get a first down. They did score off the foot of Van Druten, who hit a 35 yard field goal to give Eagles a 24-21 lead.
The defense then stepped up to finish the game. Although River Falls did get one first down on their possession, Zackary Kleven's sack of QB Ryan Kusilek on third and 10 pushed the Falcons back. On fourth down, Kusilek tried a long pass to Jordan Christianson, but it fell incomplete to end the game and cap the Eagles comeback.
The win gives UW-L a 3-5 overall record and a 3-2 mark in the WIAC. River Falls remains winless at 0-8 and 0-5.
UW-L heads down to UW-Platteville for their next game on November 9.
