Second Half Scoring Leads Viterbo into MCC Semifinals

Posted:

La Crosse, Wis. – Three second half goals helped lead Viterbo University past Mount Mercy University 4-0 in today's Midwest Collegiate Conference Quarterfinals.

Although the V-Hawks of Viterbo University had plenty of scoring opportunities early they were unable to break through until the 30th minute. That is when Katie Bares (Fr. – Belgium, Wis.) got a pass from Liz Conejo (Fr. – Sun Prairie, Wis.) and found the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season. That would be all of the scoring for the V-Hawks as they led 1-0 at halftime and had 16-0 advantage in shots.

The shots would continue in the second half for the V-Hawks as they would finally start to capitalize as well. First it was junior Bre Burry (Huntley, Ill.) scoring her second goal of the season on an assist by Conejo in the 59th minute. Just 25 seconds later, the V-Hawks would go up 3-0 on a goal by Conejo with the assist coming from Steph Wisen (Sr. – Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.). Freshman Emily Vandenberg (Pheonix, Ariz.) would cap the scoring for the V-Hawks as she scored her first goal of the season in the 71st minute.

The V-Hawk offense completely controlled the game as they outshot the Mustangs 26-1 and had an 11-1 advantage in corner kicks. Wisen and Bares each had six shots to lead the V-Hawk offense. Wisen's assist was her 15th of the season which is just one away from her single season school record 16 a year ago. Conejo now has 16 goals and 10 assists to tie her with teammate Molly Machometa (So. – McHenry, Ill.) for a team high 42 points. Junior goalie McKenzie Guth (Onalaska, Wis.) played all 90 minutes in goal for the V-Hawks and recorded her four shot out of the season.

The loss ends the Mustangs season as they finish 3-15 on the year. The win moves the V-Hawks to 14-3 on the year as they will now play the  #3 seed Grand View University, who defeated #6 William Penn University 1-0, next Saturday in the MCC Semifinals. During the regular season, the V-Hawks defeated the Vikings of Grand View 3-0.
