MADISON,
Wis. – Kate Hartman and Kelsey Andrist both scored in double figures as
the Winona
State women's basketball team closed its exhibition season with an 80-49
loss to the University of Wisconsin Sunday at the Kohl Center in
Madison.
Hartman scored a team-high 12 points on 4-7 shooting, including 2-2 from 3-point range.
Andrist finished with an 11-point performance, going 4-9 from the field and 3-7 from beyond the arc.
The
Warriors hung with the Badgers early on in a game of runs. After
spotting the Badgers
a 9-0 lead to start the game, WSU fought back with consecutive
3-pointers from Andrist, cutting the lead to 9-7. The Badgers then
scored the next nine points again to open an 18-7 lead. The Warriors
would cut the lead to eight on a Kali Hackmann layup midway
through the half and found themselves down by just 12 at the break when a
Tessa Wells layup beat the buzzer.
Wisconsin opened the second half scoring the first six points and outscored WSU 28-7 in the
first 14 minutes of the half to put the game away.
Winona
State shot 32 percent (10-for-31) in the opening half, but was just
2-for14 from long
range. The team improved its shooting in the second half, shooting 36
percent (9-for-25), but allowed Wisconsin to shoot 62 percent from the
floor in the final 20 minutes and 51 percent for the game.
Tessa Wells scored six points on 3-of-11 shooting and grabbed three rebounds, while Tara
Roelofs and Emily Wirth each added a pair of baskets. In all, 11 Warriors scored on the afternoon.
Winona State opens the regular season on Nov. 10 when it hosts crosstown foe Saint Mary's
at 3 p.m. in McCown Gym.
