LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW)-- Colder temperatures are on the way and La Crosse Winter Warming Center is open for the season.
The center is located on the lower level of the First Baptist Church in La Crosse. It provides a warm and safe place for 15 local homeless adults, ages 18 and up. The intake office is open from 9 to 10 PM. After 10, the hospital and police can refer people.
The warming center accepts people with mental health and addiction issues. Most other shelters in town do not.
"For various reasons there was this whole population who had no where to go and over the winter months, that gets pretty critical," said Mary Fitzpatrick of Catholic Charities. "We don't breathalyzer people, we kind of accept them where they're at. If they are in a condition where they can't answer a few simple questions we do provide a ride for them to detox."
