It's no secret that Wisconsin is known for award-winning cheese and dairy products and two restaurants in New York are helping spread the word!
Founded by native Wisconsinite Daniel Schuman, 5oz. Factory delivers Wisconsin Custard and grilled cheese to hungry New Yorkers.
"After a year of taste testing over fifteen custard stands in many different states, and tasting Wisconsin cheese, I said I'm going to bring the best of Wisconsin dairy to New York City and 5 OZ Factory in the west Village," says Schuman. "I moved here 9-1/2 years ago, and in all my years of being in New York City I was used to hard ice cream, crystallized ice cream, and I said to myself, I can do this better."
But Schuman not only wants to promote custard, he wants to tout the fine cheeses of his home state as well, especially in grilled cheese sandwiches. "The core of what we have is our 5oz. Factory Melt, which is a Cheddar, Swiss, Gruyere, and Colby. And that seems to be the most popular one at this point," says Schuman.
Up the street at another restaurant, Melt Shop, founder Spencer Rubin dedicates his menu to melted Wisconsin cheese. "We've had lines since the day we opened our doors, you know people get so excited when they hear there's a restaurant devoted entirely to artisanal grilled cheese sandwiches," says Rubin.
Judging by the lines of people waiting for grilled melted perfection, Wisconsin cheese is here to stay.
"The most popular sandwich is our buttermilk fried chicken sandwich, which is home-made buttermilk fried chicken, home-made red cabbage slaw, we use sour dough bread, and of course pepper jack cheese from Wisconsin," says Rubin. "We chose Wisconsin because they just stick to their guns and they know how to make amazing cheese."
