UW-L Volleyball Team Advances with Five Set Victory

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team earned a 3-2 (25-23, 21-25, 13-25, 26-24, 16-14) victory over UW-Oshkosh Tuesday night in Mitchell Hall in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Tournament First Round.  The Eagles improve to 15-13 on the season while the Titans wrap up their season at 22-11. 

UW-L advances to the WIAC Tournament Semifinals for the first time since 2008.  The Eagles will play at top-seeded UW-Stevens Point in the WIAC Tournament Semifinals Friday, November 8 at 7:30 p.m.

UW-L fell in the 2008 semifinals to UW-Oshkosh, but came back to defeat UW-Whitewater in the third-place match.  The Eagles earned a bid to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Championships in 2008, finishing 1-1.

In Tuesday's match, UW-L raced out to an early 6-3 lead in the opening set. The Eagles later led 16-10 and 18-13, but the Titans cut the deficit to 21-19.  UW-Oshkosh could get no closer than two points the rest of the set. 

UW-Oshkosh took the next two sets to take a 2-1 advantage.  After the Eagles scored the first point of the second set, the Titans went on a 7-0 run.  UW-L trailed 16-10, but scored five straight points to cut the lead to one.  The set was tied at 17-17, 19-19 and 20-20 before UW-Oshkosh scored five of the final six points to earn the win.

The Titans led 6-2 and 10-4 in the third set and the Eagles could get no closer than four points the rest of the set. 

UW-L led 10-5 in the fourth set, but UW-Oshkosh scored seven consecutive points to lead 12-10. The set was tied 20-20 after UW-L scored three straight points.  The Eagles led 24-22 when the Titans tied the set with two straight points, but UW-L scored the final two to earn the win. 

UW-Oshkosh scored the first three points of the fifth and deciding set before UW-L scored the next three.  The fifth set was tied three times, including 10-10 when the Titans took a 12-10 lead. After UW-L cut the lead to 12-11, UW-Oshkosh scored the next point for a two-point advantage.  The Eagles then tied it with two points, but the Titans went ahead 14-13 and serving for the match.  UW-L then tallied the final three points to earn the victory.   

Crystal Ziegler led UW-L with 19 kills, including the final point of the match.  Leah Putzier recorded nine kills for the Eagles while Jill Entinger finished with eighth.  Lauren Probst and Kayla Ashland each had six.  Cassie Raduka recorded 42 assists as the Eagles hit .080 for the match. 

Lauren Rosowski had a team-high 14 digs while Courtney Geisler finished with 13 and Raduka 11.  Putzier and Entinger each had 4.0 blocks. 

Katelyn Malcheski led UW-Oshkosh with 21 kills while Mikala Sebastian recorded eight and Jessica Fischer seven.  Alison Tomczyk had 19 assists and Morgan Cizauskas 14 as the Titans hit .163. 

Mandy Trautmann recorded 29 digs while Danielle Stoppenbach finished with 11 and Cizauskas 10.  Nerissa Vogt had 5.0 blocks.

The teams combined for 26 service aces (UW-L with 15; UW-Oshkosh with 11). 

UW-L returns to action Friday, November 8 at UW-Stevens Point in the WIAC Tournament Semifinals.
