Madison, WISCONSIN (WXOW) - A man wanted in La Crosse County for 1st Degree Reckless Homicide is arrested in Dane County, Wednesday.

According to the Dane County Sheriff's office, they were assisted by the City of Madison and Town of Madison Police in conducting a high-risk traffic stop near the Seminole Highway exit.

Officials said a Dane County Traffic Team deputy was working on Highway 51, Wednesday morning, when he ran a random check on a 2002 Toyota Corolla.   He found the registered owner, Malachi Hankel, had an outstanding warrant from Lacrosse County for 1st Degree Reckless Homicide.

After calling for additional law enforcement to respond, the vehicle was stopped and Hankel was taken into custody without incident.  Hankel, 28 of Madison, was booked into the Dane County Jail and he will be returned to LaCrosse County to face the Homicide charge.

According to a La Crosse County criminal complaint, on Sept. 6, 2013, the La Crosse County Sheriff's Department responded to a home in the Town of Barre, for a deceased man.  When officers arrived they found Thomas Tremain slumped on a coach dead.   A La Crosse County Investigator said, a small baggy which, based on their training and experience is of the type commonly used to package illicit drugs, was found on the coffee table nearby.  Also on the coffee table was a handwritten note.

The note read as follows:

Tom, my name is Malachi.  Please call me

I had to drive back home tonight.  I didn't have your phone number so you will have to call me.  I hope you are doing OK.

Thank you!

According to the criminal complaint, an officer contacted Malachi Hankel and he admitted that he and Tremain had consumed heroin prior to his death.  When asked how Tremain got the heroin, Hankel told the investigator he had provided the heroin.

An autopsy was performed on Tremain and a Dane County Medical Examiner reported that it was his medical opinion that Tremain had died following an acute intoxication due to the combined effects of heroin, alcohol, and alprazolam.
