La Crosse, WIS. (WXOW) -----------The girls high school basketball season started Monday with teams conducting their 1st practices of the season. That includes at Onalaska where the Hilltoppers are looking to defend their MVC title.
Onalaska finished last season with a 20 and 4 record and reached the regional finals before falling to La Crosse Central. That loss has fueled "Ona" in the offseason and their core group of players who return from last year's team have high expectations.
"Losing last year, I know all of us it was just the worst feeling ever, especially how we lost and everything. I think this year we're really determined and we're going to make things happen," said senior Natalie Soper.
The Hilltoppers are looking to reach new heights in 2014.
"Our expectations are to get where we were last year and go farther, that's really what it's all about. We have a lot of work to do and that's got to be our push this year is we have got to get better to get farther than we were last year," said Head Coach Rob Vieaux.
"This year our main goal is to get to state so that is also going to drive us to get farther than we did last year and coming off that tough loss, definitely," said Senior Courtney Meyer.
