Badgers educating younger players on rivalry

Posted:

Madison, WISCONSIN  The Badgers moved up 3 spots to 19th in the latest BCS standings.

But they only celebrated a few minutes before turning their attention to Minnesota and the battle for Paul Bunyan's Axe.

Like the Badgers, the Gophers are also 8-and-2.

And when the two meet in Minneapolis, it'll be the first time since 2005 that both teams are ranked.

No Wisconsin player currently on the team has ever been without the axe.

The Badgers have won it 9 straight years so it's vital the new guys understand just how important it is to keep it in Madison.

"It's kind of a tradition each week when we play Minnesota to have the highlights rolling on the TV's in the locker room.  So they're getting a taste this week," said senior linebacker Chris Borland.

"As we all know in rivalries like this, it's a one game championship.  The kids have been in this program for a long time.  They get it.  They understand it.  So the young kids need to understand the tradition.  They need to learn quickly what it's all about," said head coach Gary Andersen.

Kickoff at TCF Bank Stadium is set for 2:30pm Saturday.
