COPY-Minn. man gets 27 years in wife's murder

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - A Minnesota man convicted of killing his wife and dumping her body in the Mississippi River has been sentenced to 27 years in prison.

Judge Leonardo Castro on Monday gave Jeffery Trevino of St. Paul a prison sentence above state guidelines.

Prosecutors had sought a 30-year prison term for Trevino, citing aggravating factors. Prosecutors believe Trevino didn't provide medical aid to his wife, Kira Steger (STEG'-ur), and that he disposed of her body and didn't tell anyone.

Sentencing guidelines call for a maximum 15 years in prison.

The Star Tribune ( reports Trevino's attorney argued his client should get about 10.5 years.

A Ramsey County jury convicted the 39-year-old Trevino of second-degree unintentional murder last month. Steger, who grew up near Wausau, Wis., went missing the night of Feb. 21.
