COPY-Work continues to soak up oil from towboat spill

LECLAIRE, Iowa (AP) - Work continues on the Mississippi River at LeClaire to clean up a fuel and oil spill and remove a partially sunken towboat.

The U.S. Coast Guard is leading the effort of federal, state and local government agencies.

A salvage vessel is on site, preparing to attempt to lift the boat out of the water.

More than 25,000 gallons of oil has been pumped from the towboat. Diesel fuel was also pumped out of its fuel tanks.

The Coast Guard says nearly 35,000 gallons of oily water mixture has been removed from the river. The boat carried about 91,000 gallons of petroleum products when it partially sank on Monday.

Coast Guard officials worry thousands of migratory birds north of the LeClaire will move toward the spill as river ice advances southward.
