No charges against Lewiston's police chief

ROCHESTER, Minn. (KTTC) -- No charges will be filed against Lewiston's police chief.

That's the word from Olmsted County Attorney Mark Ostrem after an investigation requested by the Winona County Attorney's office.

In a statement released Wednesday, Ostrem said his office had been reviewing an investigation stemming from allegations that Joseph Hastings, chief of police in Lewiston, had committed "illegal interception of oral communications."

That's a felony under Minnesota law. But Ostrem said he declined to file a criminal complaint, finding "insufficient evidence to prove the allegations beyond a reasonable doubt."

Hastings has worked for the city of Lewiston since 2010. He was on paid leave during the investigation.
