APPLETON, Wis. (AP) - Appleton Xavier senior quarterback Matt Ferris is the Wisconsin Associated Press High School Football Player of the Year.

Ferris' record-breaking season helped lift Xavier to within a game of competing for the WIAA Division 3 state championship.

The 6-foot-5, 175-pound Ferris threw for 3,949 yards and 50 touchdowns, both state records.

Post-Crescent Media reports other players nominated include Monona Grove offensive lineman Jaden Gault and Mukwonago linebacker Dominic Cizauskas, both Badger recruits.

The AP's coach of the year is Clint Peters of Winneconne, whose team went from being a No. 6 seed to winning the WIAA Division 4 state title.

Oshkosh Northwestern Media reports other coaches nominated were Greg Malling of Arrowhead, Steve Jones of Kimberly, Mike Stassi of Monona Grove, Jeff Koenig of Stanley-Boyd and Rob Stoltz of Greendale.
