Is Wisconsin's economy finally on the mend?

LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) -- Wisconsin's economy is on the mend according to Governor Scott Walker.

Walker visited La Crosse Tuesday for a meeting of the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation.

Walker cited Wisconsin's 6.5% unemployment rate for the month of October -- its lowest unemployment rate in five years.

"Obviously we're not satisfied there," Walker said, "we'd like to see it go even lower as employment goes up."

Walker added Wisconsin's job numbers often don't draw as much media coverage as national, job reports.

"The very people who, a few days ago, celebrated the President having the lowest unemployment since 2008, ignored the fact that, one month earlier, Wisconsin had its lowest unemployment rate since 2008," Walker said.

"People need to just look at the data," the Governor said. "The data is clear."

One La Crosse business owner said he's feeling the improvement.

Justin Garvey is one of three co-owners at Metre, LLC, an advertising firm on 5th Avenue.

Metre opened in May.

"Advertising is one of the first things to be cut when the economy is in a bad place," Garvey said.

But in recent months the business has noticed a bit of a turnaround.

"We have seen a lot of signs that things are starting to head in a positive direction," he said, "lots of planning for new campaigns, lots of inquiries about possibilities for new ad campaigns."

Metre employs nine employees -- four of whom work part time.

Garvey said he's hopeful the business will continue to attract clients.

Walker said he's hopeful Metre won't be the only company reaping the benefits of what he sees as an economic recovery across the state.
