UW-La Crosse Student Union project advances

Madison, WISCONSIN (WXOW) -  The State Building Commission approved the final design of the new University of Wisconsin - La Crosse (UW-L) Student Union project.

Construction on the project will begin in July 2014.

The new Student Union building will replace the existing Cartwright Center.

"We are pleased that this project is moving forward with broad support from the UW System, students, and local leaders," said Sen. Jennifer Shilling and Rep. Jill Billings. "This project will help to maintain UW-L's reputation as a world class university and community centerpiece for years to come."

The $53.3 million Student Union construction project is estimated to generate $102.3 million in economic activity and create over 900 new jobs. The new Student Union will be located across the street from the Veterans Memorial Sports Complex and adjacent to the new UW-L parking ramp that is currently under construction.
The commission also approved funding for the design of a Science Labs building at UW-L.  The building would address needs for classroom space not available currently in Cowley Hall.
