LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) – WAFER food pantry can better serve people in need thanks to a new walk-in cooler.
The new cooler can store up to 1,000 pounds and allows the pantry to supply fresh food. It started running this week,
Before the addition, WAFER had to give some of their fresh food items to other pantries because they didn't have the storage space.
"One of the most alarming statistics is that a lot of the people that frequent the panties, suffer from obesity. Why is that? I don't know. Maybe the fact they have limited access to fresh product. So by offering fresh product, like produce, dairy and meat, we're able to round out the food package," said Erin Waldhart, WAFER executive director.
WAFER is asking the community for donations to help fund the cooler.
A donor will match up to $9,000.
To help, mail or drop off a check to 403 Causeway Blvd., La Crosse 54603, or donate online to www.waferlacrosse.org.
All donations must be made by Dec. 31.
