First Confirmed Flu Case in La Crosse

La Crosse, WI (WXOW) -Gundersen Health System has confirmed the first flu case in La Crosse.

Each year there are about 36,000 flu-related deaths in the United States.

The flu vaccine is the best defense against getting the flu.

The Centers for Disease Control recommends everyone 6 months and older receive the vaccine.

"Influenza is easily spread from one person to another," said Bridget Pfaff, administrative director, Gundersen Infection Control.  "Everyone has a role in preventing the spread of this deadly disease to protect our most vulnerable.  Unfortunately the vaccine is less effective for those that need the most protection therefore everyone needs to do their part."

Patients can still receive the vaccine by contacting their primary healthcare provider.

Children age 6 months to 8 years who have not received two doses of seasonal flu vaccine in the past may need to receive two flu vaccines this year.
