LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) – Cold temperatures and an early frost is good for business at Bob's Bait and Tackle on French Island.
Owner Scott Gartner said ice fishing season is typically in full-swing a little before Christmas. This year, the water froze over byThanksgiving weekend.
Gartner said he's gotten almost an extra month of business and already calls this winter's sales one of the best he's ever had.
"I end my summer fishing around middle of October," Gartner said. "I have to wait ‘til ice to have really any cash flow, you know money, people coming through the door 'cause they're hunting and doing what they do normally until ice comes. All of a sudden ice comes early, our doors are ringing."
Sales are also making up for the business Gartner lost during this year's cold spring. There was a lot of rain and high water levels not conducive to anglers.
Gartner expects business to keep up until the last ice derby finishes. He said that's usually the last weekend in February.
