LA CROSSE, Wisconsin (WXOW) – At times, Mobile Meals can be short volunteers, which can pose a problem for the people who receive its services.
The program delivers meals each day to the disabled or elderly who are not able to cook on their own.
Sometimes their interaction with volunteers is the only one they have all day.
"It's just somebody to come in and break up the day a little bit. Some of them don't say more than ‘hello' or ‘goodbye' but still it's somebody who comes in like that," said Elaine Canard, a Mobile Meals recipient.
Volunteers deliver about 33,000 meals each year. Each daily route has about 16 deliveries.
Tuesday, people volunteered their time to make sure Mobile Meal recipients had a warm meal and friendly face to see on Christmas Eve.
"Some have had knee surgeries, hip surgeries, some have diabetes so bad that their feet hurt," said Connie Smith, a Mobile Meals volunteer. "So for people like myself and my husband, George Smith, it's good for us since we are able to get out to meet them, to help them, to put a smile on their face."
Mobile Meals is already projecting it will be short volunteers this coming year. To volunteer, call (608) 784-4623.
